Man Pleads Guilty After Armed Casino Robbery and Shooting at Officer in Oregon

A 54-year-old man from Umatilla County has admitted to a violent casino robbery that ended in gunfire with a police officer, bringing closure to a case that shocked the local community.

Javier Francisco Vigil pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including attempted murder, robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm. The charges stem from an incident on August 17, 2022, at the Wildhorse Resort and Casino on the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

According to court records, Vigil entered the casino and went straight to the cashier area, where he handed over a note demanding $1 million. Moments later, he escalated the situation by pulling out a handgun and threatening those nearby. He ultimately fled with nearly $70,000 in cash.

As Vigil attempted to escape, he encountered a responding tribal police officer outside the casino. Authorities say Vigil opened fire on the officer, who returned fire and struck him during the exchange. The officer survived the incident.

The case had been moving toward trial, but Vigil changed his plea on the second day of proceedings. Prosecutors had previously charged him with a six-count indictment, reflecting the severity of the crime.

Officials emphasized that the guilty plea ensures accountability without further trial proceedings. Vigil is scheduled to be sentenced on August 4, 2026, in U.S. District Court.

The case highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers and the serious consequences of violent crimes involving firearms.
