A deputy-involved shooting in southwest Miami-Dade on Tuesday afternoon has left a 15-year-old boy injured and raised questions about the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
According to officials, the incident began around 3:30 p.m. when authorities received a report of a possible firearm threat at a local park near Southwest 216th Street and 113th Avenue. Deputies were dispatched to the area to investigate the situation.
When officers arrived, they located a group of four juveniles a short distance away, near Southwest 222nd Street and 112th Avenue. What started as a response to a reported threat quickly escalated into a tense encounter between deputies and the teenagers.
During the confrontation, one deputy discharged their weapon, striking a 15-year-old boy. Officials confirmed that the teen sustained a grazing wound to the ankle. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities stated that a firearm equipped with an extended magazine was recovered near the location where the teen was injured. The presence of the weapon is expected to play a key role in the ongoing investigation.
The three other juveniles at the scene were taken into custody. At this time, officials have not confirmed what charges, if any, they may face.
Law enforcement has not released additional details about what led to the use of force, and it remains unclear how the situation unfolded in the moments before the shot was fired. An internal review, which is standard in deputy-involved shootings, is expected to examine the actions of those involved.
Incidents involving minors and law enforcement often draw significant public attention, especially when firearms are involved. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge regarding both the events leading up to the shooting and the actions taken by the deputy.
Officials have urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as they work to piece together a full account of what happened.
