Mississippi Teens Pulled to Safety After SUV Rolls Into Canal, Bystanders Rush to Help

Three siblings from Mississippi are on the road to recovery after surviving a terrifying crash that left their vehicle upside down in a canal and rapidly filling with water.

The accident occurred when the car veered off the roadway, flipped multiple times, and came to rest submerged in a nearby canal. Inside were three teenagers — Mariah Gill, a senior at Bay High School who was driving, along with her younger brothers, Michael and Matthew.

Witnesses traveling nearby described the horrifying moment the vehicle began rolling. J.D. Durant, who was driving eastbound on I-10 with his adult son James Durant and co-worker Missy Pearson, said they immediately realized the situation was critical. Fearing the worst as the car flipped repeatedly, the trio quickly pulled over without hesitation.

As the vehicle landed upside down in the water, chaos unfolded inside. Mariah later recalled hearing her brothers shouting that water was pouring in. The boys managed to escape first, but they refused to leave their sister behind, calling out that she was still trapped.

What followed was a remarkable display of courage and community. Nearly 15 vehicles stopped along the highway as bystanders rushed into the canal. Several people waded into the water to help free Mariah from the wreckage before the situation became even more dangerous. She was successfully pulled from the submerged car just in time.

Authorities later confirmed that investigators have identified a suspected second vehicle that may have been involved in the crash. The case has since been handed over to state officials for further investigation.

The Gill family has expressed deep gratitude to the strangers who risked their own safety to save the teens. In the days following the crash, loved ones have shared updates on the siblings’ recovery and launched a fundraiser to assist with medical expenses and to replace the vehicle they depended on.

While the crash left the car destroyed, the outcome could have been far worse. Thanks to quick-thinking witnesses and a powerful show of community support, all three teenagers survived an ordeal that might have ended in tragedy.
