Texas Highway Crash Sends Bananas Scattering After Alleged Intoxicated Driver Cuts Off Semi

A dramatic early-morning crash in Texas left a stretch of highway covered in crates of bananas after a semi-truck overturned while attempting to avoid a collision. Authorities arrested a 37-year-old driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI) following the incident.

The crash occurred around 2:50 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, in the northbound lanes of U.S. 75 near the Legacy Drive exit. Emergency crews, including police officers and firefighters, quickly responded to the scene after reports that an 18-wheeler carrying a load of bananas had flipped onto its side.

Investigators say the driver of an Audi allegedly changed lanes abruptly in front of the semi-truck while attempting to catch the exit. The sudden maneuver caused the truck driver to swerve in an effort to avoid a direct impact. During the attempt to regain control, the semi veered off the highway onto the service road, struck a pole supporting an overhead sign, and overturned.

The crash sent crates of bananas spilling across the roadway, forcing authorities to shut down portions of the northbound service road between Spring Creek Parkway and Legacy Drive, along with the Legacy exit ramp. Cleanup crews worked for several hours to remove debris and clear the scene.

The semi-truck driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No major injuries were reported.

The Audi driver, identified as Iverri Johnson, was arrested on suspicion of DWI in connection with the crash. He was later released on bond as the investigation continues.

Officials reminded drivers to use caution when changing lanes and to never operate a vehicle while impaired, emphasizing that split-second decisions can have serious consequences on busy highways.
