Missouri Ozarks Weather Alert: 60 MPH Storm Winds, Flash Flood Risk Near I-44, Frost Threat Early Week

Missouri – Severe weather is sweeping across the Ozarks Saturday evening, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and a growing flood risk, especially along the I-44 corridor. Conditions are already turning dangerous in parts of southwest Missouri as visibility drops and storms intensify.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a line of strong to severe thunderstorms is moving east through the region. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, with the potential for large hail and even a slight chance of isolated tornadoes. Rainfall totals are expected to range between 1 to 2 inches in most areas, but some locations—particularly along and northwest of I-44—could see as much as 3 to 5 inches.

Cities including Springfield and Branson are already experiencing worsening conditions. Low-water crossings and rural roads are especially vulnerable, with water levels rising quickly during heavy downpours. Drivers traveling on I-44, Highway 65, and Route 60 are being urged to stay alert for standing water and sudden drops in visibility.

Emergency officials warn that storms may repeatedly move over the same areas, a pattern known as “training,” which can significantly increase the risk of flash flooding. Strong wind bursts could also bring down tree branches and power lines, leading to isolated outages across affected communities.

As the storm system moves out, a sharp weather shift is expected. Skies will begin clearing by Sunday morning, allowing sunshine to return with temperatures climbing to around 69°F. However, cooler air will quickly follow overnight. By early Monday, temperatures could fall into the mid-30s, creating a risk of frost—especially for gardens and sensitive plants.

The weather pattern will stabilize early next week, bringing a gradual warm-up across the region. Highs are expected to reach the low to mid-70s by Monday and Tuesday, with calmer conditions and clearer skies.
