PITTSBURGH — A heavy police presence filled Pittsburgh’s Upper Hill neighborhood late Wednesday night after multiple gunshots were fired at law enforcement officers during an ongoing investigation tied to gun-related charges.
According to Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Chief Jason Lando, the incident unfolded shortly before 11 p.m. near Clarissa Street as Pittsburgh detectives and federal ATF agents were attempting to locate a suspect connected to a firearms investigation.
During the operation, authorities said an occupied ATF vehicle came under gunfire. Several shots struck the vehicle while officers were actively working in the area.
“The police car was struck,” Chief Lando told reporters during a late-night briefing. “Thankfully, the ATF agent inside was not injured.”
Officials confirmed that no Pittsburgh police officers were hurt during the incident. Police also said city officers did not return fire. Investigators have not confirmed whether any federal agents discharged their weapons during the confrontation.
As officers secured the scene, authorities recovered a firearm believed to be a handgun. Police later detained one individual described as a “person of interest” as detectives continued gathering evidence overnight.
Investigators were also preparing to obtain a search warrant for a nearby home on Clarissa Street connected to the case.
Chief Lando said investigators were still working to determine whether the person taken into custody was the individual responsible for firing at officers.
“This remains a very active investigation,” Lando said. “Our officers and agents were out here trying to take a dangerous person off the streets, and they put their lives at risk while doing it.”
The large police response remained in the neighborhood into the early morning hours as detectives continued processing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
No additional injuries were reported, and authorities have not yet released further information about possible charges or additional suspects.
