Philadelphia Officer Shot in Leg During Traffic Stop — Suspect in Custody, Officer Recovering Well

A Philadelphia police officer was shot in the leg Monday night during a routine traffic stop in North Philadelphia, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed.

What Happened

The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. near 17th and Cumberland Streets. Two officers from the Philadelphia Police Department’s Highway Patrol Unit stopped a vehicle with two men inside.

While one officer was frisking a passenger, the man’s gun accidentally discharged, striking the officer in the leg.

The Officer’s Condition

The 53-year-old officer — a 20-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department — was rushed to Temple University Hospital.

Commissioner Bethel gave an encouraging update:

“He’s all good. The mayor had him smiling in the room. Prognosis looks good. We are very fortunate today.”

The officer is married with three children.

The Suspect

Police confirmed the man did not have a permit for the weapon. One of the two men from the traffic stop is now in custody.

Why Were Officers in the Area?

Officers were specifically patrolling near 17th and Cumberland Streets due to recent shootings in that neighborhood.
