Police Arrest of Robbery Suspect Mischaracterized Online as ICE Brutality, Authorities Say

A video circulating widely on social media that claims to show Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents violently beating an unarmed migrant teenager has been mischaracterized, according to California law enforcement officials.

The footage, which began spreading online in late January, shows officers using force during the arrest of a juvenile suspect. Social media posts allege the officers were ICE agents assaulting a teenager during an immigration operation. However, authorities say the officers involved were members of the Anaheim Police Department, and the arrest had no connection to immigration enforcement.

What the Video Claims Online

Multiple posts shared on platforms including X, Instagram, and Facebook claimed the video depicted ICE agents pistol-whipping a 16-year-old boy who appeared to be unarmed. Some users linked the footage to broader criticism of federal immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, calling the incident an example of excessive force by federal authorities.

One widely shared post described the officers as “ICE agents” and said the incident occurred in Lynwood, California. Advocacy groups and individual users echoed similar claims, fueling outrage and calls to defund ICE.

What Police Say Actually Happened

In a statement provided to media outlets, the Anaheim Police Department said the claims are false. According to police, the arrest took place on January 30 in Lynwood and involved a 17-year-old suspect wanted in connection with a large-scale jewelry store smash-and-grab robbery in Anaheim days earlier.

Police said the suspect was the ninth individual sought in connection with the January 23, 2026 robbery, which caused more than $800,000 in stolen merchandise and damage. Investigators allege the suspects used a stolen vehicle to ram into a jewelry store before smashing display cases and fleeing with high-value items.

Authorities said the juvenile suspect fled from police on foot, ran into an occupied home, and then attempted to carjack two vehicles before being taken into custody. Officers visible in the video were wearing vests clearly marked “Anaheim Police,” not federal immigration uniforms.

“This was a robbery suspect and had nothing to do with immigration,” a department spokesperson said, emphasizing that no agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement were involved.

Use of Force Under Review

The Anaheim Police Department confirmed that the use of force during the arrest is being reviewed under standard procedures. Police said the suspect was transported to a hospital for evaluation before later being booked.

Officials added that the department released accurate details after the video went viral to address public confusion and correct misinformation spreading online.

Context of Heightened Tensions

The mischaracterized video emerged amid heightened national debate over immigration enforcement and law enforcement conduct. Protests and political tensions have increased in recent months following controversial immigration-related incidents in several U.S. cities.

Law enforcement officials urged the public to verify information before sharing content online and warned that misleading claims can inflame tensions and undermine public trust.

Investigation Continues

The juvenile suspect remains part of an ongoing criminal case related to the Anaheim jewelry store robbery. Prosecutors have previously announced multiple arrests tied to the case, and additional legal proceedings are expected as investigations continue.

Police reiterated that the incident shown in the video was a local criminal arrest, not an immigration enforcement action, and encouraged the public to rely on confirmed information from official sources.
