Inkster, Michigan — A police pursuit in Inkster, Michigan, turned tragic Friday afternoon when an innocent bystander lost their life after a suspect fleeing authorities crashed into another vehicle. The suspect was later shot by state troopers and is now hospitalized.
The incident unfolded around 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Middlebelt Road and Parkwood Street, where Michigan State Police were carrying out a search warrant linked to a homicide investigation.
According to officials, a 19-year-old man attempted to flee the scene in an SUV with a female passenger when officers tried to stop the vehicle. Instead of complying, the suspect sped away, triggering a police chase through nearby streets.
Authorities said the pursuit continued eastbound along Parkwood Street. During the chase, the suspect allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Parkwood and Oakwood streets, colliding with another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, described as an innocent bystander, was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the crash, the suspect exited the SUV and attempted to flee on foot. Troopers opened fire, striking him in the lower part of his body. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police confirmed that no other injuries were reported in the incident. Several individuals were detained at the scene, and officials stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators also recovered two firearms connected to the incident, though details about their use have not yet been released.
The case remains under active investigation. As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the troopers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
