A quiet Grapevine neighborhood was shaken Thursday afternoon when a school bus driver allegedly shot his neighbor, sending the victim to the hospital and triggering lockdowns at several nearby campuses.
Officers responded around 1 p.m. to the 3300 block of Wilshire Avenue after reports of gunfire. Authorities say a man was shot by his neighbor and was transported to a local hospital with injuries. His current condition has not been officially disclosed.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 64-year-old Shenkoru Sleshi Meketa, a school bus driver employed by the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District (GCISD).
Schools Placed on Lockdown
As police secured the scene, multiple GCISD campuses were placed under a “secure” status as a precaution. Schools affected included:
- Heritage Elementary
- Heritage Middle School
- Colleyville Heritage High School
- Grapevine Elementary
- GCISD Early Childhood Development Center
- iUniversity Prep offices
Under the secure protocol, classes continued normally inside, but all doors were locked and no visitors were permitted on campus. The restrictions have since been lifted after police cleared the scene.
Driver Fired Immediately
District officials confirmed that Meketa did not report to work Thursday afternoon. Following his arrest, the district terminated his employment.
In an official statement, GCISD said he was fired “based on the activities surrounding his arrest.” A substitute driver has already been assigned to cover his route.
Investigation Ongoing
Police say the scene is now secure and the situation is no longer an active threat to the community. However, the investigation remains ongoing and further details are expected to be released.
