She Walked Into a Trader Joe's Parking Lot With Her Mom and Never Came Home

A routine shopping trip turned into a tragedy for a Long Beach family — and the story of what happened after has left thousands heartbroken.

What Happened?

On November 2, shortly before 4 p.m., 19-year-old nursing student Grace Edwards was walking through a parking lot on Bellflower Boulevard in Long Beach, California, with her mother.

A 40-year-old man, Desean Edwards, was backing out of a parking space at a shopping center near Trader Joe’s and Five Below when he struck her.

Grace suffered severe upper-body injuries. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital — but she passed away a few days later.

Was He Distracted?

According to the Long Beach Police Department, distracted driving is believed to be a contributing factor. Police have not yet confirmed exactly how the driver was distracted at the time.

Arrest and Charges

Desean Edwards was arrested Tuesday and charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. He was booked on a $75,000 bond. His next court date is May 13.

Who Was Grace?

Grace Edwards was more than just a nursing student.

Friends and family described her as vibrant, kind and deeply devoted to serving others — caring for children at her church and in her community.

Just days before the accident, Grace had told her parents she wanted to be an organ donor.

Her Final Act of Love

On November 9, Grace was given an Honor Walk by hospital staff and surrounded by loved ones before she was taken to the OR.

Her heart was donated to an 8-year-old child.

“Her legacy is going to live on and bring life to others,” her family wrote.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support her family during this difficult time.
