Spokane Valley, Washington — A tragic shooting late Wednesday night has left a 17-year-old boy dead, shaking the local community and prompting an active investigation by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 8:10 p.m. to reports of gunfire near 16th Avenue and South Union Road. When first responders arrived, they found the teenager critically injured with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency crews, including Spokane Valley Fire and AMR personnel, the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the suspected shooter, an adult male, remained at the location and was detained without incident. Officials have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
According to preliminary findings, the situation unfolded when the teen, reportedly in distress and making statements indicating self-harm, stepped into traffic, forcing a vehicle to stop. He then entered the passenger side of a car occupied by four adults. Investigators say the driver, who was armed, confronted the teen and ordered him to exit. Moments later, the encounter escalated, ending in gunfire.
No other individuals inside the vehicle or nearby were injured during the incident.
The area along 16th Avenue, between South Pines Road and South Bowdish Road, remained closed for several hours as Major Crimes detectives and forensic teams processed evidence and reconstructed the scene.
The identity of the victim is expected to be released by the medical examiner’s office. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, seeking to understand how the confrontation turned fatal.
