Suspects in Northern California child death case arrested, await extradition

A man and woman wanted in connection with the death of a child in Northern California have been arrested in Washington state, bringing a multi-agency search to a significant development.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Sherwood D. Johnson II and 33-year-old Megan M. Fredrick were taken into custody on April 16 in Liberty Lake, Washington. Authorities confirmed that both suspects are now being held as they await extradition back to California.

How the arrests unfolded

The arrests came after coordination between investigators across state lines. Officials said a detective from Sutter County Sheriff’s Office alerted Washington authorities about the suspects roughly two days before they were located.

A task force in Spokane County began surveillance efforts soon after receiving the information. Megan M. Fredrick was first spotted at a residence on the 24000 block of East Mission Avenue, while Sherwood D. Johnson II was later located at a business on the 23200 block of East Appleway Avenue.

Both individuals were arrested later that evening without incident, according to officials.

Charges and investigation status

Authorities confirmed that Johnson and Fredrick are wanted in Sutter County on serious charges, including suspicion of murder and willful cruelty to a child resulting in death.

Investigators have not yet publicly released detailed information about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The case remains under active investigation as officials work to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.

What happens next

The suspects are currently in custody in Washington and will be extradited to California, where they are expected to face formal charges. Law enforcement agencies in both states continue to coordinate on the case.

Officials say more updates will be shared as the investigation progresses and additional details become available.
