Teen Driver Running Red Light at 121 MPH Kills Mother and Daughter Returning Home from Newspaper Delivery

Aurora, Colorado – A tragic high-speed crash in Aurora, Colorado, has claimed the lives of a mother and her teenage daughter, leaving the community shaken and raising serious concerns about reckless driving. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 20, 2025, when a speeding vehicle ran a red light and caused a devastating collision.

According to the Aurora Police Department, the crash took place around 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of South Airport Boulevard and East Alameda Avenue. Authorities reported that 19-year-old Olvin Lidenis Carcamo-Meza was driving a black Audi sedan at an extremely high speed when he failed to stop at a red light.

Investigators revealed that the vehicle was traveling at approximately 121 mph in a zone with a posted speed limit of 40 mph. As the driver sped through the intersection, his car slammed into a white Hyundai sedan carrying 37-year-old Maira Zapata Ramirez and her 16-year-old daughter. The two were reportedly heading home after completing an early morning newspaper delivery shift.

The impact of the crash was severe. Both the mother and daughter were pronounced dead at the scene. A third vehicle, a Toyota sedan waiting in a turn lane, was also struck during the incident. The driver of that vehicle sustained only minor injuries.

Carcamo-Meza himself suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. He was later taken into custody after being discharged. Authorities stated that while speed was a major factor in the crash, drugs and alcohol were not suspected to have played a role.

Following the investigation, Carcamo-Meza pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree assault with violent crime enhancements. The plea deal resulted in the dismissal of earlier charges, including vehicular homicide and child abuse causing death.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 1 and could face up to 40 years in prison.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the deadly consequences of reckless driving, especially excessive speeding. The loss of a mother and her young daughter, who were simply returning home after work, has left a lasting impact on the community and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety.
