San Francisco, California — A tragic case out of San Francisco has taken a serious legal turn after prosecutors filed murder charges against a couple following the fentanyl-related death of a two-year-old child earlier this year.
The incident dates back to February 12, when emergency responders were called to a residence on 18th Street near Dolores Park at approximately 5:16 a.m. after a report of a child not breathing. When paramedics arrived, the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials later indicated that the child may have been deceased for several hours before the call was made.
What Happened Inside the Home
According to police findings and court documents, officers discovered fentanyl along with drug paraphernalia inside the home. An autopsy later confirmed that the child died due to acute fentanyl toxicity, highlighting the deadly presence of the substance within the living environment.
Investigators also noted concerning behavior at the scene. Authorities reported that the child’s mother, Michelle Price (38), appeared to show signs of drug impairment, including slurred speech and an unresponsive demeanor. Meanwhile, her boyfriend, Steve Ramirez (43), allegedly fled the location on a bicycle before being apprehended.
Charges Upgraded to Murder
Initially, both individuals were charged with felony child endangerment and drug-related offenses. However, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that prosecutors have now filed an amended complaint charging both Price and Ramirez with second-degree murder.
Officials say the decision reflects the belief that the adults were aware of the extreme danger posed by fentanyl.
“This case reflects a situation where there was no safe environment for the child,” Jenkins said during a press briefing, emphasizing the lethal risk associated with fentanyl exposure, especially for young children.
In addition to murder charges, both defendants are also accused of willfully causing harm resulting in the death of a child. Ramirez faces additional charges related to resisting law enforcement.
Legal Proceedings and Current Status
Despite the severity of the allegations, both defendants were initially allowed to remain out of custody, a move prosecutors opposed. The District Attorney’s Office has stated it will seek to have both individuals held without bail as the case moves forward.
A hearing regarding the amended charges is scheduled to take place at the Hall of Justice.
A Rare and Serious Case
Authorities noted that this marks one of the first cases in San Francisco where murder charges have been directly linked to a fatal fentanyl overdose involving a child. The case underscores growing concerns about the widespread presence of fentanyl and its devastating consequences, particularly in households where children are present.
Ongoing Concerns
The incident has sparked renewed discussions around child safety, substance abuse, and accountability. Officials continue to stress the importance of keeping dangerous substances out of reach and ensuring safe living conditions for children.
The investigation remains active, and further developments are expected as the case proceeds through the legal system.
