A deadly house fire in San Francisco’s Portola neighborhood claimed the life of one person Tuesday, according to fire officials.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the 500 block of Dwight Street after reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and significant flames coming from inside the residence. The blaze was classified as a one-alarm fire.
Firefighters worked quickly to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes. Despite their efforts, the interior of the house sustained major damage. During a search of the property, crews located one individual inside the building.
The person was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of family members.
Fire officials are now investigating the cause of the blaze. It remains unclear how the fire started, and investigators will examine the structure to determine whether there were any working smoke alarms or other safety devices present.
The incident has left the Portola community shaken, as neighbors described seeing emergency vehicles line the street while firefighters battled the flames. No additional injuries were reported.
Officials are reminding residents to ensure smoke detectors are functional and to have an emergency evacuation plan in place. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
