Friends and family are grieving the heartbreaking loss of a woman killed in a violent crash on the Florida Turnpike near the Sunrise exit — a collision investigators say unfolded during a high-speed pursuit involving a stolen truck.
A Routine Drive Home Turns Fatal
Bonnie Bouffard was simply heading home from work Thursday afternoon when her life was suddenly cut short. Authorities say a driver operating a stolen truck slammed into her vehicle amid an active police chase.
Loved ones describe Bouffard as compassionate, dependable and deeply devoted to those around her.
“She was my best friend. A sister. My grandkids called her Aunt Bonnie,” said Jackie Major, who had known her for more than 30 years. “Bonnie was everything you’d want in a friend. She tried to help people.”
Bouffard worked in medical records and was known for her kindness and willingness to support others whenever they needed her.
Police Pursuit and PIT Maneuver
According to investigators, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop the fleeing suspect using a precision immobilization technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver. The maneuver is designed to end pursuits by forcing a fleeing vehicle to spin and stop through controlled contact with the rear of the vehicle.
During the attempt, the stolen truck struck Bouffard’s car, resulting in the fatal crash.
While officers are trained to execute PIT maneuvers, the tactic has sparked debate in recent years because of the potential for severe injuries or fatalities. Federal guidance recommends that officers weigh factors such as traffic congestion, speed and surroundings before initiating the maneuver.
Reports indicate that moments before the crash, a deputy considered performing the maneuver but chose against it due to heavy traffic conditions.
“How can you do that in rush hour traffic?” Major questioned. “How can you put so many lives in danger?”
Suspect Facing Serious Charges
The accused driver, identified as Anna Giza, now faces a charge of murder along with multiple additional offenses.
Authorities allege that after stealing the truck, Giza struck two occupied police vehicles and accelerated toward officers who were on foot. Once on the turnpike, she reportedly drove at high speeds, weaving aggressively through traffic before the collision occurred.
A judge has set bond at $3.5 million. Giza did not appear in bond court Saturday.
Family Preparing Final Farewell
Bouffard’s family is traveling from New Jersey to arrange funeral services. A celebration of life is being planned as loved ones gather to honor a woman remembered for her warmth, generosity and unwavering friendship.
As the investigation continues, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the tragic chain of events that ended an innocent life on a busy highway.
