Twin Boys, 10, Shot Dead — What Their Father Did Next Has Left Neighbors Speechless

LOS ANGELES — A quiet Sunday evening in a Canoga Park apartment complex turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy, leaving an entire community in shock and grief.

Twin brothers Joseph and Greysen Chavez, just 10 years old, were fatally shot on June 7 — and the man believed to be their own father pulled the trigger before turning the gun on himself.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to an apartment on Owensmouth Avenue at 7:15 p.m. after a call reporting a shooting. When officers arrived, they found three people dead — the two young boys and a 37-year-old man, each with apparent gunshot wounds. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The LAPD is investigating the incident as a murder-suicide.

The father’s identity has not yet been officially released, pending notification of next of kin. The Robbery-Homicide Division, Special Section, has taken over the investigation.

For neighbors who knew the family, the news was devastating and difficult to process.

“The kids never had a chance to have a life,” a nearby resident told local media. “Why? To take his children’s lives and his own life. It’s just, there are no words right now.”

The neighbor added that if the father was struggling, help was available — and that the loss of two innocent young boys makes the tragedy even harder to bear.

Joseph and Greysen were only 10 years old. They will not get the chance to grow up.

As authorities continue their investigation, the community is left asking questions that may never have satisfying answers — and mourning two little boys who deserved so much more.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 anytime, 24/7. Help is always available.
