A series of car burglaries in Washington Township took a dangerous turn after suspects led police on a chaotic chase before escaping into Philadelphia, authorities said. The incident has raised concerns among residents as officials warn about a growing pattern of thefts targeting unlocked vehicles.
Incident Overview: Suspicious Activity Sparks Police Response
The situation unfolded on Friday, April 17, in the Bateman Farms development in Washington Township, Gloucester County. Police were called to the neighborhood after reports of a suspicious vehicle and individuals attempting to open parked cars.
Officers arriving at the scene spotted two vehicles — a white Jeep Compass and a white Chevrolet SUV — leaving the area. When police attempted to stop them, both vehicles fled, ignoring traffic signals and creating a dangerous situation on nearby roads.
High-Speed Escape and Narrow Miss on Busy Road
According to authorities, the fleeing drivers ran a red light at Hurffville-Grenloch Road and Woodbury-Turnersville Road, narrowly avoiding a collision with an oncoming tractor-trailer. The pursuit quickly escalated, putting other drivers at risk.
Chaos in Grenloch: Suspects Abandon Moving Vehicle
As the chase continued into the Grenloch section, the situation became even more alarming. Two suspects jumped out of the moving Jeep while it was still in drive and ran toward the Chevrolet SUV.
During a brief foot pursuit, the Jeep driver slipped twice while attempting to flee. Police said the suspect was also seen trying to conceal an unknown object in his waistband before escaping.
Meanwhile, the unattended Jeep continued rolling down Eastview Avenue, crashing into three parked cars before finally hitting a tree.
Evidence Recovered: Links to Multiple Thefts
Inside the abandoned Jeep, officers found credit cards, wallets, cash, and other valuables believed to be stolen from several unlocked vehicles in the area. The vehicle has been taken into custody and is being processed for evidence.
Investigators later confirmed that both vehicles involved were stolen. The Chevrolet SUV had just been taken from Bateman Farms, while the Jeep Compass was reported stolen from West Deptford a day earlier. The license plate on the Jeep was also stolen and traced back to Philadelphia.
Suspects Escape Toward Philadelphia
Police described the suspects as four young males wearing dark clothing and black face masks. After regrouping, they fled the scene in the stolen Chevrolet SUV and were last seen crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge into Philadelphia.
Additional reports of attempted car break-ins were also received from nearby streets, including Pennington Way and Upton Way, suggesting a broader pattern of criminal activity.
