Suspected Impaired Driver Arrested After Late-Night Hit-and-Run at Busy Intersection

Sterling Heights, Michigan — A late-night crash in Sterling Heights took a dangerous turn over the weekend when a driver allegedly fled the scene after rear-ending another vehicle, prompting a swift police response and an arrest on suspicion of impaired driving.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. on April 18 near the intersection of Schoenherr and Utica roads, a commonly traveled area in the city. According to officials, officers were first alerted after receiving reports of a silver sedan driving northbound on Schoenherr near Metropolitan Parkway — notably on a damaged wheel rim, raising immediate safety concerns.

When officers arrived in the area, they learned that the same vehicle had just rear-ended a blue Toyota Prius. Instead of stopping, the driver of the sedan reportedly left the scene, leaving the other driver behind.

The driver of the Prius managed to pull over safely after the crash and was later found to have suffered minor injuries. Emergency response was not delayed, but the situation could have escalated if not handled quickly.

Police were able to locate the fleeing vehicle shortly after the incident and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was taken into custody on charges of operating while impaired and failing to stop and identify at the scene of a personal injury crash. Authorities confirmed that the individual was transported to the Macomb County Jail, where they are being held pending the results of a blood test.

Incidents like this highlight ongoing concerns about impaired driving and the risks it poses not only to those behind the wheel, but also to others sharing the road. Even a moment of poor judgment can lead to serious consequences, both legally and physically.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine further details surrounding the crash.
