A devastating house fire near eastern Hemet turned into a powerful story of rescue and hope after more than 60 dogs were safely saved by the Riverside County Department of Animal Services on Thursday.
The dogs were quickly transported to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus, where they are now receiving care — and waiting for loving families to step forward.
A Massive Rescue Operation
Emergency responders and animal services teams worked together to remove dozens of frightened pups from the smoke-filled home. Large-scale rescues like this require coordination, speed, and resources — and officials say their teams responded immediately to ensure every animal was brought to safety.
Field Commander Lesley Huennekens emphasized that situations like these highlight the importance of community support.
With the sudden arrival of more than 60 additional dogs, local shelters are now facing extreme overcrowding.
Shelters at Breaking Point
Riverside County’s animal shelters were already stretched thin before the rescue. Officials report:
- Over 1,000 dogs currently housed across facilities
- Shelters operating at 240% overcapacity
- San Jacinto Valley campus now at 300% overcapacity
The latest rescue has intensified the urgent need for help from the public.
Adoption Fees Waived — Limited-Time Opportunity
To encourage community support, Riverside County has waived all adoption fees at every shelter location through March.
Each adoption includes:
- Spay or neuter surgery
- Microchipping
- Core vaccinations
- Engraved ID tag
This is a rare opportunity to bring home a new companion at no cost — while directly helping relieve overcrowded shelters.
🏠 How You Can Help Right Now
Animal Services is asking the public to:
- Adopt a dog
- Foster temporarily
- Partner with rescue organizations
Walk-ins are welcome and strongly encouraged so staff can assist families in finding the right match.
Even fostering for a short time can make space for incoming animals who may need urgent shelter due to emergencies or crises.
A Second Chance for Dozens of Dogs
What began as a tragic house fire has become a chance for dozens of dogs to start over. Now, the community has the opportunity to turn rescue into recovery — and recovery into forever homes.
If you’ve been considering adoption, this may be the moment that changes a life — theirs and yours.
