A Wisconsin father has been sentenced to prison after a disturbing case that left six young children locked overnight inside a storage unit shocked the community.
According to authorities in Milwaukee, 33-year-old Charles Dupriest will serve five years in prison followed by five years of extended supervision. A jury found him guilty on multiple charges, including five felony counts of child neglect and illegal firearm possession.
The case came to light when police responded to a late-night call reporting a crying infant inside a locked unit. Officers arriving at the scene discovered six children—ranging from just two months to nine years old—inside a dark, overcrowded storage space. The only toilet was a bucket, and investigators described the conditions as overwhelming and unsafe.
What stood out most to the court was not just the living conditions, but the decisions behind them. Despite claiming homelessness, prosecutors emphasized that safer alternatives were available, including staying with relatives.
In court, Dupriest acknowledged the impact on his children, but the judge made it clear that concern alone was not enough. The ruling focused on accountability and the need to protect vulnerable children from harm.
The children’s mother, who was also charged, previously pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and received probation.
Authorities say the case is a reminder that difficult circumstances do not justify putting children in dangerous situations—and that their safety must always come first.
