A disturbing incident in Leeds has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old mother after police say she used bear spray on her young children as punishment.
According to authorities, the situation came to light on March 8 when a child was seen running down a residential street crying and calling for help. Witnesses quickly contacted emergency services after noticing the child’s red eyes and swollen face.
Officers from the Leeds Police Department responded to the scene and located the child’s home. Both the child and her sibling—reportedly of elementary school age—were taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
Police allege that their mother, Christie Williams, had sprayed both children directly in the eyes and mouth with bear spray. During questioning, she reportedly told officers the children were being “unruly.”
Local police officials strongly condemned the act. Authorities emphasized that bear spray, designed to deter wild animals, is significantly more potent than standard pepper spray and can cause serious harm, including potential long-term eye damage.
Williams was arrested and charged with torture or willful abuse of a child. She was later released on bond. Meanwhile, the children have been placed under the care of child welfare services as the investigation continues.
Officials say the case remains under review, and further legal action may follow.
