Memphis, Tennessee: A 21-year-old woman in Memphis, Tennessee, has been arrested after police say she dragged the father of her child and his mother nearly 20 feet with her Chevrolet Malibu during a late-night domestic dispute.
According to the Memphis Police Department, the incident happened shortly before midnight on May 15 near the intersection of Park Avenue and South Greer Street.
Investigators identified the suspect as Jashunte Lewis. She now faces multiple charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and domestic assault causing bodily harm.
Police say Lewis arrived at the home in a white 2020 Chevrolet Malibu and became involved in a heated argument with the father of her child in the driveway.
During the confrontation, witnesses told officers that the man walked behind the vehicle when Lewis allegedly shifted the car into reverse and attempted to hit him. The vehicle narrowly missed him, according to investigators.
The man then moved toward the front of the driveway, but police say Lewis shifted the Malibu into drive and again attempted to strike him. Authorities said the second attempt also missed.
Investigators say Lewis then parked the vehicle, but the argument continued between Lewis, the man, and the man’s mother.
At some point during the dispute, the man opened the driver’s-side door while his mother stood nearby between him and the vehicle door, according to police. Authorities allege Lewis suddenly accelerated the car in reverse, causing both victims to fall beneath the open door.
Police say the pair were dragged approximately 20 feet down Park Avenue while Lewis continued reversing the vehicle.
The entire incident was reportedly captured on video and later reviewed by investigators.
Both victims suffered injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital by Memphis Fire Department crews. Police said the man sustained injuries to his ankle, wrist, forearm, and hand, while the older woman suffered injuries to her face, shoulder, and knee.
Investigators also noted that the Chevrolet Malibu was damaged during the incident. According to police, the driver’s-side door would no longer close properly and remained open while the vehicle was being driven.
Authorities later located Lewis driving the damaged vehicle with the door still open. She was taken into custody the same day and questioned by investigators.
Police said Lewis waived her Miranda rights and spoke with detectives during an interview.
She was booked into the Shelby County Jail on multiple felony charges. Court records show her initial bond was set at $250,000 before later being reduced to $15,000, which was posted Monday.
Lewis is scheduled to appear in court again on June 1.
