Nelson County, Virginia — A tragic case out of Nelson County, Virginia has led to a prison sentence for a young mother after the death of her 6-week-old son, a case that shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about child safety.
Authorities say the incident dates back to December 10, 2024, when emergency responders were called to a home on Taylors Creek Road in Afton after reports of an unresponsive infant. When deputies from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and medical personnel arrived, they found the baby in critical condition. CPR was performed at the scene before the child was rushed to University of Virginia Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Despite efforts to save him, the infant, identified as Cyrus James Garfield, died four days later on December 14.
An autopsy conducted by the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined that the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse. Officials reported that the baby had suffered multiple broken ribs prior to his death and ultimately died from suffocation.
The child’s mother, Autumn Grace Woods, was initially charged with second-degree murder. However, she later reached a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and felony child abuse in February 2026.
During court proceedings, prosecutors described the infant as being found “blue” and unresponsive, with visible signs of trauma. Woods told investigators she had fallen asleep on a couch with the baby, and that the child’s father later moved him before also falling asleep. When they awoke, the infant was not breathing, prompting a 911 call.
On Friday, a Nelson County judge sentenced Woods to 10 years in prison. However, six years and six months of that sentence were suspended, meaning she is expected to serve approximately three and a half years behind bars.
The infant’s father, Ethan Garfield, is also facing serious charges, including murder and child abuse. He is scheduled to appear in court soon for a plea hearing.
Prosecutors acknowledged that the exact sequence of events leading to the baby’s death may never be fully known. Still, the medical findings and evidence of prior injuries played a key role in the case.
The heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of infant safety and vigilance, as well as the severe legal consequences tied to cases involving child abuse.
