Nearly 50 suspects charged. 35+ kg of meth seized. 9 agencies involved. Here’s what happened inside West Texas’s biggest drug bust in years.
Federal and local officials announced Monday the takedown of a major drug trafficking network in the Concho Valley, following an 18-month undercover operation that led to charges against 48 individuals from San Angelo and surrounding areas.
The operation — dubbed “Operation Concho Valley Shakedown” — targeted a network responsible for flooding West Texas communities with methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and deadly fentanyl.
What triggered the crackdown?
Investigators from the DEA, FBI, Texas DPS, Homeland Security, and five other agencies spent 18 months building cases against the network. The sweep resulted in 24 federal indictments handed down May 13, with arrests carried out last week. Another 24 suspects face state-level felony and misdemeanor charges.
Who was charged?
Among those facing the most serious federal charges — conspiracy involving 500 grams or more of meth — are Oscar Leonel Casillas Jr., Cedrick Jerrod Jones, George Henry Walker, Marcus Maurice Parker, Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr., Shunte Gregory Ray, Tasha Diane Rose, and several others.
Shunte Gregory Ray faces an additional charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Juan Carlos Sanchez is charged as a convicted felon found in possession of a firearm.
U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said at a news conference:
“This should send a loud and clear message to drug dealers in the Concho Valley: We are coming for you.”
What happens next?
Federal defendants could face up to life in prison if convicted. State-level prosecutions are being handled by two district attorneys — Allison Palmer of the 51st District and John H. Best of the 119th District — covering 16 felony and 9 misdemeanor cases.
DEA Special Agent in Charge Miguel Madrigal called the operation a landmark example of multi-agency collaboration, saying authorities had “removed a dangerous presence that had cast a shadow over West Texas communities.”
