A tragic incident at Shasta Lake in Northern California has left a family grieving after a 5-year-old child drowned Monday morning, authorities confirmed.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Turntable Bay just before 11:30 a.m. following reports of a child missing in the water. When emergency crews arrived, they learned the child had entered the lake without wearing a life jacket.
Officials said the situation escalated quickly. The child went underwater before family members were able to reach him or secure a personal flotation device.
A large-scale search operation was immediately launched, involving multiple agencies including fire crews, air support teams, and medical responders. After an intense search lasting over an hour, the child was located and pulled from the water.
Despite rescue efforts, the child could not be saved. Authorities later confirmed the child was released to the coroner’s office. The identity has not yet been made public, and officials stated that no foul play is suspected.
The sheriff’s office expressed deep condolences to the family, describing the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous open water can be—especially for young children.
Officials also issued a public safety warning, emphasizing that while air temperatures may feel warm, lake water remains dangerously cold during this time of year. Sudden exposure can lead to shock and rapid drowning, even in shallow areas.
