72-Year-Old Woman Killed After Car Crashes Into Bench Near Co-Op City

Bronx, New York — A tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon when a vehicle lost control and crashed into pedestrians sitting on a bench, leaving one woman dead and another person injured.

According to authorities, the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bartow Avenue and Co-Op City Boulevard. The area, typically busy with local foot traffic, quickly turned into an emergency scene as first responders rushed to assist the victims.

Preliminary findings suggest that the driver, a 55-year-old man, may have experienced a sudden medical episode while behind the wheel. He was operating a red 2018 Mazda CX when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and veered onto the sidewalk, striking two individuals seated on a nearby bench.

A 72-year-old woman suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released her identity, pending notification of her family.

A second victim, a 36-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. Emergency responders transported him to Jacobi Hospital, where he was reported to be conscious and in stable condition.

Officials confirmed that the driver remained at the scene following the crash. He was also taken for medical evaluation and is currently in stable condition. At this time, no arrests have been made as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The New York City Police Department’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is actively investigating the crash. Authorities are working to determine the exact cause, including confirming whether a medical emergency was the primary factor.
