EAST BALTIMORE — Two people were hospitalized and at least one resident was displaced after a row home fire broke out Friday night in East Baltimore, according to officials.
Fire breaks out on Curley Street
The Baltimore Fire Department said crews were dispatched to the 400 block of Curley Street around 8:01 p.m. after reports of a residential fire. By 8:10 p.m., firefighters upgraded the incident to a working fire as flames spread through the row home.
Fire officials said the blaze was brought under control at approximately 8:51 p.m., preventing further damage to neighboring homes.
Injuries reported, residents evacuated
Two individuals were injured during the incident and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been released, and officials did not identify the victims.
During the emergency response, surrounding residents were ordered to evacuate as a safety precaution due to fire extension and roof involvement.
Displaced resident recounts escape
A nearby resident identified as Constance described the frightening moments leading up to her evacuation. She said she was upstairs when her son alerted her that the neighboring home was on fire.
Firefighters soon arrived and instructed everyone to leave immediately.
“They came in and said everybody has to get out because the roof was on fire,” Constance said. “I was terrified. I’ve had a stroke and can’t move the way I want to, but they got me out.”
She added that parts of the roof were damaged and she was forced to leave personal belongings behind while restoration crews worked to find temporary accommodations.
“I’m waiting to see if I can get back in,” she said.
Investigation underway
Fire investigators and forensic units responded to the scene following extinguishment to assist with recovery and determine what caused the fire. Officials said the origin and cause remain under investigation.
Recent string of serious fires in the region
The Curley Street fire is the latest in a series of dangerous residential fires reported across the Baltimore area since the start of 2026.
Earlier this year in Baltimore County, a 4-year-old child was killed and a man was critically injured after a townhouse fire in Parkville. In another incident, doorbell footage captured neighbors rescuing a family from a burning home.
Just one day before the Curley Street fire, Baltimore firefighters responded to a blaze on Luzerne Avenue, where crews rescued a person trapped on the second floor. That victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Fire officials continue to urge residents to check smoke detectors, maintain clear exits, and practice fire safety as winter heating use increases across the region.
