MORAINE, Ohio — One person was killed and two others were injured Thursday morning after a driver fled a traffic stop and crashed while traveling the wrong way on a one-way road in Moraine, according to police.
The incident began around 11:50 a.m. near the intersection of Kettering Boulevard and Ohio 741, when a Moraine police officer attempted to stop a Jeep for a traffic violation. Moraine Police Sgt. Andrew Parish said the stop was related to a traffic offense, though the specific violation has not yet been confirmed.
Instead of stopping, the driver of the Jeep fled the scene, heading northbound against one-way traffic on Kettering Boulevard. Parish confirmed that the officer did not pursue the vehicle, following department policy.
Shortly after the attempted stop, Moraine fire and police dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a serious crash involving the fleeing Jeep. Authorities said the collision occurred less than two miles from the initial traffic stop, in the 3100 block of Kettering Boulevard near Edgefield Street.
Callers also reported that the driver of the Jeep ran from the crash scene immediately after the collision.
Police officers quickly responded to the area and began rendering emergency medical aid to those involved. According to authorities, the driver of the second vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.
Despite life-saving efforts by Moraine fire personnel, the injured driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family members.
The passenger in the Jeep was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials confirmed.
Officers later located and arrested the driver of the Jeep behind a nearby business. The driver was also taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and is currently in police custody.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the Jeep driver or announced formal charges, but police indicated that multiple charges are expected, including those related to fleeing police and the fatal crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
As a result of the crash and investigation, Kettering Boulevard was closed for several hours, causing traffic disruptions in the area. Crews worked at the scene to collect evidence, document the crash, and clear the roadway.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the Jeep fleeing the traffic stop to contact the Moraine Police Department, as investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the deadly collision.
Further updates, including the identification of the victim and potential charges, are expected as the investigation progresses.
