Austin authorities have identified the three people killed in the devastating mass shooting that unfolded early Sunday in the city’s busy Sixth Street entertainment district. As the community mourns, investigators say the case remains complex — and a potential motive is still under active review.
Victims Identified
During a Monday afternoon news conference, city officials confirmed the identities of two of the victims:
- Ryder Harrington, 19, a Texas Tech student
- Savitha Shan, 21
Later Monday night, police confirmed that a third victim, Jorge Pederson, 30, died from his injuries.
“I cannot imagine the grief, pain, and loss these families are feeling today,” said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, expressing condolences to the families.
Mayor Kirk Watson echoed the sentiment, calling it a “dark moment” for the city while highlighting the unity and support shown by the Austin community.
13 Others Wounded, Over 150 Witnesses
In addition to the three fatalities, 13 others were injured in the attack. Officials said more than 150 witnesses were present during the shooting, adding to the complexity of the investigation.
Authorities have announced that additional details — including body camera footage and more information about the suspect’s background — will be released later this week.
A family resource center is also being established to provide support to victims and their loved ones.
The Suspected Gunman
Police identified the shooter as Ndiaga Diagne, 53, who was killed by officers during an exchange of gunfire.
According to investigators:
- Diagne opened fire shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday
- The attack occurred outside Buford’s, a bar on Sixth Street
- He allegedly fired from an SUV while circling the block
- He then exited the vehicle and continued shooting on foot
Witness videos captured officers returning fire down the street before the suspect was neutralized.
Multiple weapons were later recovered from the SUV. Authorities confirmed the firearms used in the attack were legally purchased in 2017 in San Antonio.
Possible Terrorism Angle Under Review
Federal officials are reviewing whether the attack could be linked to terrorism.
Investigators reportedly discovered:
- The suspect was wearing a hoodie with the words “Property of Allah”
- A shirt featuring a design similar to the Iranian flag
- An Iranian flag and images of Iranian leaders inside his home
A search warrant executed at his residence uncovered these items, prompting further review of possible ideological motives.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a final motive.
Background of the Suspect
Officials said Diagne was born in Senegal and entered the United States in 2000 on a tourist visa. He obtained a green card in 2006 after marrying a U.S. citizen and became a naturalized American citizen in 2013.
Police have indicated they will release additional details regarding his criminal history later this week.
What Happened That Night
According to law enforcement:
- The suspect was driving around the block in an SUV
- He began shooting from the vehicle at people seated outdoors
- He exited the SUV and continued firing while walking westbound
- He then moved eastbound down the block before officers engaged him
The entertainment district was crowded at the time of the shooting, making the rapid police response critical in preventing further casualties.
Investigation Ongoing
As Austin continues to grieve, law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active. Authorities are carefully reviewing witness accounts, video footage, and forensic evidence to determine a clear motive behind the attack.
More updates are expected later this week as investigators piece together the full picture of what led to one of the deadliest incidents in the city’s recent history.
