West Orange High School Makes History with State Chess Title — Now Headed to Nationals in Chicago

West Orange High School’s chess team has officially claimed the top spot in New Jersey — and they’re not stopping there.

After a stunning run through the state tournament, the Mountaineers are now preparing to compete on the national stage in Chicago later this month, marking the first time in school history that West Orange will be represented at the high school national championships.

A Stunning Upset That Changed Everything

West Orange captured the New Jersey K-12 state scholastic championship, defeating powerhouse programs such as Princeton Prep and Livingston along the way.

The victory wasn’t just impressive — it was unexpected.

“It was a serious upset. It really spoke to all of the hard work that my team put in and just the level of dedication that we have and the love of the game that we all have,” said team captain David Milstein.

The win cemented the team’s place at the top of the state rankings and proved that discipline, preparation and teamwork can overcome even the strongest competition.

“A Beautiful Opportunity”

Now, the focus shifts to Chicago.

For many of the players — especially seniors — this is more than just another tournament.

“It’s a beautiful opportunity. I love going to big tournaments. And I know a lot of us also love going to big tournaments, especially with the seniors getting this win, it really is a beautiful opportunity for us to go to Chicago,” said sophomore Delmari Ferguson.

Senior Zander Venutolo echoed that excitement:
“To go to nationals, it’s exciting, because we’ve never gone before. And it’s going to be a new experience for all of us.”

For the seniors, it represents a final chapter — a chance to compete on the biggest high school chess stage before graduation.

Community Rallies Behind the Team

Competing at nationals comes with significant costs — including flights, hotel stays, tournament entry fees and meals. To ensure that every team member can participate, the chess program launched a fundraiser.

The response from the community has been overwhelming.

“This community responded with phenomenal support. So I have to say, first and foremost, thank you to everyone who has made going possible,” said chess club advisor Ara Berberian.

The team has already raised more than $5,000 toward their trip — a testament to how much the community believes in them.

More Than Just a Tournament

For West Orange, this journey is about more than trophies.

It’s about representing their school on a national platform.
It’s about creating lifelong memories.
And it’s about inspiring future players who see what dedication can accomplish.

From a major state upset to a historic national appearance, the Mountaineers have already made their move.

Now, all eyes are on Chicago.
