Two residential fires broke out in Stockton on Monday evening, sending six people to the hospital and leaving one person in critical condition.
Fire crews were first dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to a home on Bishop Street. When firefighters arrived, they found a single-story house heavily involved in flames. Emergency responders worked quickly to contain the blaze and assist those inside.
Authorities confirmed that six individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. One person remains in critical condition, two sustained moderate injuries, and three others suffered minor injuries.
According to the homeowner, a visiting family member allegedly locked herself inside the garage and intentionally set a fire. The homeowner stated that the individual had been struggling with mental health issues and that the family had previously attempted to seek help for her. Officials have not yet released an official cause, and the incident remains under investigation.
At nearly the same time, firefighters were called to a second blaze near South Filbert and East Marsh streets. That fire reportedly started outside before spreading into a nearby residence. Crews were able to bring the situation under control quickly, and no injuries were reported in that incident.
Both fires are currently under active investigation as authorities work to determine the exact causes and circumstances surrounding the events.
