Darby Borough, Pennsylvania: Community members across Delaware County are expressing anger and concern after a school crossing guard was violently attacked while helping children cross the street earlier this week.
Authorities said the incident occurred Monday afternoon at the intersection of South 6th and Walnut streets in Darby Borough. The crossing guard was reportedly assisting students after school dismissal when a driver, frustrated by the delay, exited his vehicle and confronted her. The situation quickly escalated, and the driver allegedly punched the guard, knocking her unconscious in front of several children.
Victim Leaves Position Citing Safety Concerns
The crossing guard was affiliated with Safe Corridors, a nonprofit organization founded in 2012 that focuses on school support and mentoring programs. The organization currently employs approximately 60 crossing guards serving the city of Chester, Darby Borough, and Sharon Hill.
According to officials from Safe Corridors, the victim is deeply shaken by the attack and has decided to resign, stating she no longer feels safe performing her duties.
Organization leaders described the assault as shocking and unprecedented, noting that this was the first time one of their crossing guards had been intentionally attacked by a member of the community.
New Guard Steps In Amid Rising Concerns
Larry Cottrell has since taken over duties at the same intersection. He acknowledged that the role now feels more dangerous than before.
He emphasized the need to remain alert at all times, carefully monitoring both traffic and surroundings. Cottrell also expressed concern about the emotional impact on the children who witnessed the violence.
Push for Stronger Legal Protections
In response to the attack, Safe Corridors is working with the office of Anthony Williams to introduce legislation that would classify crossing guards as first responders. The proposal would also establish mandatory minimum sentences for individuals who assault them.
Supporters argue that crossing guards face daily risks while protecting children and deserve stronger legal protections. Officials say the job can be particularly challenging depending on the community and traffic conditions.
Reviewing Safety Measures
Following the assault, Safe Corridors is reassessing its safety protocols. One proposed measure includes equipping crossing guards with walkie-talkies to enable faster communication in emergencies.
The organization also provides regular professional development and safety guidance. Leaders stressed that guards are instructed to remain professional and avoid engaging in verbal disputes with aggressive drivers to prevent escalation. After reviewing video footage and speaking with the victim, the organization maintains that the assault was completely unprovoked.
Community Rallies in Support
Residents have since shown strong support for crossing guards, highlighting their critical role in student safety. Parents and community members emphasized that many drivers ignore stop signs and traffic rules, making crossing guards essential for protecting children.
Meanwhile, police are seeking assistance from the public to identify the suspect. Sen. Williams’ office is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
The incident has sparked broader conversations about public respect, road safety, and the protection of school safety personnel in communities across Pennsylvania.
