A quiet early Sunday morning in Chicago turned tragic after a high-speed crash claimed the life of a cyclist and left a young woman critically injured.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident happened around 1:20 a.m. near the intersection of West 63rd Street and South Kedzie Avenue, along the border of the Marquette Park and Chicago Lawn neighborhoods.
Police say a red SUV was traveling eastbound at a high speed when it ran a red light and struck a man riding a bicycle. The force of the crash was severe, and the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV then collided with a silver vehicle that had the right of way and a green light. The driver of the SUV fled on foot before officers arrived, leaving behind chaos and injured victims.
A 22-year-old woman who was a passenger in the SUV was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Meanwhile, a 60-year-old woman driving the silver car was treated at the scene.
The crash site remained closed for hours as investigators worked through the wreckage, with the damaged SUV wrapped around a pole and police tape surrounding the area.
This incident adds to growing concerns about road safety in the city, especially involving cyclists and hit-and-run cases.
Authorities are actively investigating and searching for the driver.
