Suspect Dies After Pursuit Crash in Riverside County Following Grappler Deployment

A tense police pursuit in Riverside County ended in tragedy Wednesday afternoon after a suspect crashed and was later found dead following a standoff with deputies.

According to authorities, deputies initially spotted a man wanted for grand theft near Pats Ranch Road and Limonite Avenue around 2 p.m. When he refused to stop, a chase began that stretched across parts of Jurupa Valley. During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly called 911 and claimed he was armed with a handgun, escalating concerns among responding officers.

The situation briefly turned into a standoff near Jurupa Valley High School, prompting a temporary lockdown to ensure student safety. Deputies attempted to negotiate, but the suspect fled again, leading to a second phase of the pursuit.

Around 3:20 p.m., deputies deployed a pursuit-ending device known as a Grappler. Moments later, the suspect lost control of his white Cadillac CT5 and crashed into a residential wall. Despite the crash, he remained inside the vehicle and continued communicating with dispatch for some time.

What followed was a prolonged standoff involving SWAT teams, drones, and specialized equipment. Authorities used tear gas and other tactical tools in an effort to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.

After several hours and repeated attempts to negotiate, deputies approached the vehicle and discovered the suspect suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released as the investigation continues.
