A late-night apartment fire in Village of Sturtevant left multiple families displaced and one woman fighting for her life, according to Racine County Sheriff’s Office officials.
Emergency crews responded around 10:47 p.m. Wednesday to a building near 86th Street and Shannon Lane after reports of a second-floor unit fully engulfed in flames. Deputies quickly began evacuating residents as thick smoke spread through the complex.
In total, 15 people were safely evacuated.
Residents described the terrifying moments as the fire intensified. One resident said the smoke became overwhelming the moment the door was opened, with firefighters already rushing in and urging everyone to get out immediately.
Firefighters later heard screams coming from the unit believed to be the origin of the fire. Crews rescued a 64-year-old woman, who was transported in critical condition to Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital.
Several residents lost most of their belongings in the blaze. One man, who had previously lost his home in another fire, said he only managed to grab essentials like his wallet and keys before escaping.
Authorities confirmed that displaced residents are receiving temporary assistance from the American Red Cross, while pets have been taken to nearby shelters for care.
Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
