A tragic incident in Indianapolis has left a 21-year-old woman dead and her boyfriend facing criminal charges, after what authorities describe as reckless handling of a firearm inside a home.
Police say the shooting happened late on April 1 at a residence on Carlyle Place. When officers arrived, they found Rebecca Carter critically injured from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries.
Investigators allege that Louis Jenkins Jr., 20, discharged the weapon while the two were sitting together on a couch. According to witness statements, the group had been casually interacting with the firearm moments before it went off. Several people, including minors, were reportedly inside the home at the time.
Accounts of the incident differ. One witness told officers the gun was being handled in a careless manner during a video call, while Jenkins claimed the weapon discharged accidentally when his finger slipped on the trigger. After the shot, he reportedly expressed immediate regret, acknowledging that the gun had been loaded.
Authorities say Jenkins attempted to assist Carter after the incident and contacted his family before police arrived. He has since been charged with reckless homicide, a serious offense tied to unsafe actions resulting in death.
Prosecutors emphasized that the case highlights the severe consequences of mishandling firearms, especially in informal or joking situations. Carter’s family remembers her as energetic and full of life, urging others to recognize how quickly situations can turn fatal.
Jenkins has been released on bond and is expected to appear in court in early June.
