Texas Mother Jailed After Letting Drunk Teen Son Drive, Resulting in Fatal Crash

A woman in Bellmead has been sentenced to prison after a tragic decision led to the death of a bicyclist and put her children in danger.

Erika Martinez-Ramirez was convicted of child endangerment and sentenced to two years in prison following an incident that occurred in July 2024. Authorities say she gave her car keys to her 14-year-old son, who was intoxicated and unlicensed, and instructed him to drive his younger sister to a nearby location.

During the early morning drive, the teenager struck and killed 67-year-old bicyclist Dennis Welch. The crash also caused the vehicle to slam into a house. While the young girl inside the car suffered only minor injuries, the consequences of the crash were fatal for Welch, who died at the scene.

Investigators revealed this was not an isolated incident. The teen had previously been caught driving multiple times, including a prior traffic stop and a hit-and-run case. Despite repeated warnings from law enforcement, the mother continued allowing him to drive.

Prosecutors stated that while stronger charges like manslaughter were considered, they lacked proof that the mother knew her son was intoxicated. Instead, they pursued the child endangerment charge, which carried the same penalty and was easier to establish in court.

Officials described the case as highly unusual, emphasizing that parents are rarely prosecuted for their children’s actions—but noted that repeated negligence made accountability necessary.
