Chicago, Illinois – A routine patrol on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man after authorities say he was found carrying a loaded firearm while riding the Red Line, raising concerns about safety on public transportation.
According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. Sheriff’s police were conducting standard patrol checks inside a train car when they noticed a man allegedly smoking, which is a violation of Chicago Transit Authority rules.
Officials said the man, identified as Angel Williams, was approached by officers and taken into custody for disorderly conduct. He was then escorted off the train at the 69th Street station.
During the encounter, deputies discovered that Williams was carrying a loaded handgun. Authorities confirmed that he had a valid concealed carry license. However, under Illinois law, firearms are not permitted on public transit systems, regardless of whether a person holds a concealed carry permit.
Following the discovery, Williams was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. He later appeared at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse for an initial hearing and was released from custody on Thursday, April 17.
The case is still pending and will proceed through the court system. Officials emphasized that all charges at this stage are allegations, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Authorities continue to remind riders to follow transit safety rules and report any suspicious activity to ensure a secure environment for all passengers.
