Anderson County, SC. — A routine traffic stop in Anderson County turned violent Monday afternoon, leaving a sheriff’s deputy injured and a suspect dead after an exchange of gunfire.
According to officials, the incident occurred on April 20 along Interstate 85 near mile marker 11. An Anderson County deputy had pulled over a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Austin Derrell Robertson, a resident of Harrisburg. What began as a standard stop quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation.
Authorities say the deputy, while speaking with Robertson, called for backup. A second deputy arrived shortly afterward. During the interaction, Robertson allegedly retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and opened fire, striking one of the deputies.
In response, the assisting deputy returned fire, hitting Robertson. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Robertson succumbed to his injuries. The Anderson County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that his death was ruled a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
The injured deputy was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have not released detailed information about the deputy’s condition but confirmed that medical care was provided promptly.
Multiple agencies, including the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, the Coroner’s Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, are actively investigating the incident. As with all officer-involved shootings, a thorough review is underway to determine the full sequence of events.
The stretch of I-85 where the shooting occurred saw temporary disruptions as law enforcement secured the area and began their investigation.
This incident highlights the unpredictable risks law enforcement officers face during routine duties. Authorities have stated that more details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
