Bronx, New York: A tragic fire swept through a residential building in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon, leaving at least two people dead and nearly a dozen others injured. The incident unfolded in the Belmont neighborhood, sending shockwaves through the local community as firefighters battled flames for hours.
According to the New York City Fire Department, the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. inside a five-story apartment building located on East 187th Street, between Belmont Avenue and Cambreleng Avenue. Officials say the fire is believed to have started on the first floor, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
What began as a localized blaze quickly turned into a deadly situation. Flames surged upward through the building’s stairwell, spreading rapidly across multiple floors and trapping residents inside. Thick smoke filled hallways and apartments, making escape extremely difficult for many.
By late afternoon, the situation worsened when part of the building’s roof collapsed around 4:30 p.m., sending debris crashing onto the street below. Emergency crews worked urgently to secure the area while continuing rescue efforts.
FDNY Chief Kevin Woods described the intensity of the rescue operations, noting that at least one resident had to be saved using a ladder after becoming trapped at a window with no access to a fire escape. Scenes from the site showed firefighters climbing ladders and breaking windows to reach those inside.
More than 270 firefighters and EMS personnel responded, highlighting the scale and seriousness of the emergency. Despite their efforts, two individuals were found dead in separate areas of the building, likely due to heavy smoke and flames.
In addition to the fatalities, 11 others were injured. Two victims are reported to be in serious condition, while several others—including five firefighters and four residents—suffered minor injuries during the rescue and firefighting operations.
Authorities confirmed that the entire building was evacuated as a precaution. An official from New York City Emergency Management stated that displaced residents are being assisted while safety assessments continue.
The fire also caused significant damage to the ground floor, where two businesses were nearly destroyed. Investigators from the New York City Department of Buildings have been deployed to examine the structural integrity of the building and determine the cause of the blaze.
As emergency crews continued working into the night to fully extinguish the fire, several nearby streets were closed, disrupting traffic and local activity in the area.
