A Pennsylvania mother is now facing a jury for the death of her 5-year-old adopted son — and the details emerging from the courtroom are deeply disturbing.
Who Is on Trial?
Lauren Maloberti, 36, of Westmoreland County, is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and child endangerment in the death of her adopted son, Landon Maloberti.
Her ex-husband, Jacob Maloberti, 36, faces the same charges and is expected to testify against her.
What Happened to Landon?
On January 30, 2023, the couple brought an unconscious Landon to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. He was transferred to a children’s hospital and died about a week later.
Medical staff reportedly found dozens of bruises on his body. He was diagnosed with catastrophic brain trauma and died from blunt-force head trauma, prosecutors say.
What Prosecutors Are Saying
Assistant District Attorney Cassidy Hatten told jurors that Lauren Maloberti turned her role as a mother into cruelty.
Other children in the home reportedly told investigators that Landon was:
- Smacked by his mother
- Sprayed with water
- Forced to drink from a toilet
- Isolated and ignored
- Monitored by a camera
- Disciplined far more than other children
“Loving With Other Kids — Not Landon”
Jacob Maloberti’s mother testified that Lauren was a loving mother to her other children — but treated Landon differently.
Landon’s aunt also testified that Lauren’s patience with the boy wore thin over time, and she often complained he misbehaved and didn’t show her affection.
What the Defense Says
Lauren Maloberti’s attorney called the case “complicated” and suggested prosecutors are misrepresenting what happened.
Background
Lauren assumed custody of Landon in 2017, about two months after her cousin gave birth to him. She formally adopted him two years later. The couple married in 2021, after which conditions in the home reportedly worsened.
The trial is expected to last two weeks.
