It was supposed to be an ordinary Saturday night drive. Instead, it turned into a scene no one in Burke County, Georgia, will forget anytime soon.
A massive tree collapsed across both lanes of Highway 56 South, about a half-mile south of Pine Hill Church Road, striking two vehicles and killing three people in what authorities are calling a devastating and sudden tragedy.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene around 9:05 p.m. after reports of crashes with injuries. What they found was heartbreaking.
A black Jeep Cherokee had been directly struck by the falling tree. The driver, an 18-year-old from Midville, Georgia, somehow survived with minor injuries and was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment.
But the second vehicle — a blue Ford Taurus — wasn’t as fortunate.
The Taurus was found on the south side of the tree, facing the wrong direction, with catastrophic damage. Emergency responders worked urgently to reach those inside. The driver and two rear-seat passengers were trapped, and despite every effort, all three were pronounced dead at the scene. Coroners officially confirmed the deaths at around 10:05 p.m.
The severity of the wreckage forced crews to physically extricate the victims before they could even be formally pronounced.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the incident. Additional details, including the identities of the three victims, are expected to be released by the Burke County Coroner’s Office.
