WONDER LAKE, Illinois — It started with a sound no one in the neighborhood could ignore.
At 7:50 p.m. Sunday, a massive explosion tore through a home in the 7400 block of Birch Drive, near Wonder Lake Road — sending shockwaves through the quiet community far northwest of Chicago.
By the time first responders arrived, one person was dead. Two others were fighting for their lives.
‘I Had No Idea a House Exploded’
Residents heard the blast before they understood what had happened.
“I thought a transformer exploded,” said neighbor Gillian Bass. “Until my grandma went to talk to our neighbors, and they were like, ‘Yeah, a house exploded.'”
Bass said she had no idea the sound she heard was a home being destroyed.
She was not alone in that disbelief. Across the block, neighbors stepped outside to find smoke billowing into the night sky — and a home reduced to rubble.
One Dead, One Airlifted
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District confirmed that one person died at the scene. Their identity has not been released.
Two others were injured in the explosion. One of them was airlifted to the hospital by medical helicopter due to the severity of their injuries. The conditions of both injured individuals have not been made public.
A box alarm was called to bring in extra crews and EMS through a mutual aid response, with emergency teams rushing to the scene from surrounding areas.
‘The House Was in Shambles’
For those who arrived at the scene, the destruction was unlike anything they had witnessed.
Cyrena Sutherland described a scene of chaos and heartbreak.
“I showed up, the house was in shambles,” Sutherland said. “I saw the son out there crying about his parents, so I went to give him a hug to comfort him — and I realized he was covered in burns himself.”
Another neighbor said she watched the boy’s father physically crawling through the rubble just to escape the wreckage.
Crews were also seen assisting someone on a stretcher as emergency personnel worked across the scene.
Two Neighboring Homes Also Damaged
The force of the explosion was powerful enough to damage two nearby homes as well.
As of Monday morning, the cause of the explosion remained under investigation. No official determination has been released by authorities.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District has not yet provided an update on the identities of those involved or the current conditions of the hospitalized individuals.
