Central Illinois Weather Alert: Dust Advisory and Strong Storm Risk Could Impact Travel Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Central Illinois residents are being urged to prepare for dangerous weather conditions on Tuesday, May 12, as strong winds, blowing dust, and possible evening thunderstorms move across the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Blowing Dust Advisory from noon until 7 p.m. for several parts of central Illinois, including areas around Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur. Forecasters say southwest winds between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph, could create hazardous travel conditions throughout the afternoon.

Dry farmland and ongoing agricultural activity may allow loose soil to become airborne quickly, reducing visibility on roadways in a matter of seconds. Drivers traveling on Interstate 55, Interstate 72, and Interstate 74 could encounter sudden dust clouds during peak travel hours.

Weather officials warn that visibility may drop rapidly in open rural areas, creating dangerous conditions for motorists. Drivers are advised to slow down immediately if they encounter blowing dust and avoid stopping directly on roadways.

Along with the dust threat, central Illinois could also see scattered showers and thunderstorms develop later Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening hours as a cold front pushes through the state.

Some storms may become severe, bringing the possibility of strong wind gusts and small hail. While tornado risk currently appears limited, forecasters say weather conditions could still change through the day.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and lightweight objects that could be blown around by strong winds.

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly by Wednesday, with highs mostly in the 60s and low 70s across the region before warmer spring weather gradually returns later in the week.

Emergency officials are asking people to stay weather-aware throughout the day and monitor local alerts as conditions continue evolving across central Illinois.
