A violent confrontation in Chicago’s Avalon Park neighborhood late Sunday night has resulted in serious criminal charges after a 40-year-old man was critically injured in an alleged stabbing.
Authorities say Nigel Burwell, 45, has been charged with multiple felony offenses, including:
- Attempted first-degree murder
- Aggravated battery
- Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon
- Aggravated battery causing bodily harm

According to police, the incident unfolded around 10:11 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Stony Island Avenue. Investigators say two men were involved in a physical altercation when the situation escalated.
During the fight, Burwell allegedly stabbed the 40-year-old man.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
