Columbus, Ohio Weather Alert: 70–80% Storm Risk Tonight May Disrupt Evening Commute

Columbus, Ohio – A round of thunderstorms is expected to move across much of the state Friday evening, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible travel delays during peak commute hours. Officials warn that conditions could quickly deteriorate after 5 p.m. as a cold front pushes into the region.

According to the National Weather Service Wilmington, rain chances will rise sharply to 70–80% by the evening, with the most active weather expected across central and southern Ohio. The system is expected to develop late in the afternoon and continue through the night.

Cities including Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Springfield, and Newark will see warm temperatures in the low to mid-80s before storms arrive. Once the storms begin, rainfall could become intense in short bursts, leading to reduced visibility and water buildup on roads.

Major highways such as Interstate 70, Interstate 71, and Interstate 75 may be especially affected, with drivers likely to experience slower traffic and hazardous conditions during the evening commute.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, forecasters caution that some isolated storms could produce strong wind gusts capable of knocking down small branches or unsecured objects. Lightning and brief heavy downpours are also likely, especially after sunset.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, stay updated on weather alerts, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Drivers should use headlights in heavy rain and allow extra travel time.

Storm activity is expected to weaken early Saturday morning as the cold front moves out of the region. Cooler and more comfortable conditions will follow, with weekend highs dropping into the low to mid-70s.

Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates if stronger storm activity develops overnight.
