A heartbreaking search came to a solemn end this week after a 15-year-old boy was found in a lake days after the canoe he was riding in overturned.
Kaipo Kaminanga, a high school freshman, was discovered Thursday evening in Red Cove Lake following an intensive search effort that began earlier in the week. Authorities confirmed that a dive team successfully located and recovered the teen after three days of searching in freezing conditions.
What Happened?
According to officials, Kaipo had been canoeing with three friends on Monday when their boat suddenly tipped over. While others were able to make it to safety, Kaipo did not resurface.
Emergency crews quickly launched a search-and-rescue operation. Despite challenging weather and frigid waters, teams worked around the clock in hopes of finding the teen.
On Thursday, the Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team confirmed they had located Kaipo’s body in the lake.
In a statement, the team expressed their condolences, saying they were grateful to help bring closure to the family and community during such a painful time.
A Community in Mourning
Kaipo was remembered as a kind-hearted and well-loved student. Teachers described him as someone who connected easily with everyone, regardless of social circles.
Austin Roof, a teacher with the Aleutians East Borough School District, shared that Kaipo was not only friendly and respectful but also a talented basketball player who brought energy and positivity to the court.
“He was kind to everyone,” Roof said. “He’s just a really special child.”
In response to the tragedy, Roof has created a GoFundMe campaign to support the Kaminanga family during this difficult time.
Remembering Kaipo
As classmates, teachers, friends, and family process the sudden loss, the focus remains on honoring Kaipo’s life — his kindness, athletic talent, and the joy he brought to those around him.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of how quickly accidents on the water can turn devastating, especially in cold conditions. Community members continue to rally around the family, offering prayers, support, and donations.
While the search has ended, the impact of Kaipo’s life — and his loss — will not be forgotten.
