Heads Up: Meteorologists warn that some storms could become strong to severe, especially Monday evening and again Tuesday. Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts closely.
Northern Indiana is waking up to one of the nicer days of the week — clear skies, low humidity, and highs in the lower to middle 60s. But forecasters at the National Weather Service’s Northern Indiana office say residents shouldn’t get too comfortable. A significant warm-up is building, and it’s bringing storm clouds along with it.
Friday will already feel noticeably warmer, with temperatures climbing into the low 70s. A few isolated showers may pop up Friday morning, mainly along and south of U.S. 24 — but it won’t be a washout. The bigger shift arrives Saturday, when humidity levels surge and afternoon highs shoot into the lower to middle 80s. That combination of heat and moisture is exactly the kind of setup that fuels afternoon and evening thunderstorms, and forecasters say that’s precisely what to expect.
Storm chances will linger into Sunday before the pattern ramps up again Monday and Tuesday, when a more active weather system pushes through the region. Forecasters describe it as a multi-round event — not continuous rain, but repeated bursts of showers and thunderstorms moving through. Some of those storms, particularly Monday evening and Tuesday, could pack a punch.
Cities across northern Indiana will be in the bull’s-eye for the storm activity:
- South Bend
- Fort Wayne
- Elkhart
- Warsaw
- Michigan City
The silver lining: forecasters stressed that the stretch from Saturday through Tuesday will have dry gaps between systems — it won’t be a week of nonstop rain. Still, with storm timing and severity still evolving, residents across the region are encouraged to keep a close eye on updated forecasts heading into the weekend.
For now, enjoy Thursday — it may be the last quiet day for a while.
